If you’re not a native Italian speaker, you might be asking yourself, what is CelloVoci? Don’t worry, you’re not the first. We’ve just launched the group, and already, our name has been butchered countless times. You don’t need to know much about the Italian language to know what the word cello is. Voci is the plural word for voices. Despite the recognition that Effie has, and we have as BRANDEN & JAMES, our names by themselves won’t always sell tickets to an unknown audience. In the middle of our 34-city pop infused classical music tour we recently completed together, the three of us brainstormed and came up with CelloVoci as our name. It simply means cello and voices. We wanted to call ourselves something that instantly tells an audience what they’re getting.
Creating something that had an err of sophistication about it without being too stuffy was crucial for us. We turned to our social media channels and asked our collective fan bases for their input on a trio name that would be suited to us. Wow, Did that open a can of worms! Many people were constructive and clever with their feedback. Others just wanted to be humorous and choose things that would get a laugh. MANY of the choices were laughable, and, in the end, we weren’t influenced by anyone’s input, and simply chose CelloVoci.
We’ve been slowly introducing the name to other people, and they seem to understand it. After working through pages of style and branding guidance with our social media manager and publicist, we’ve realized it can be quite tricky to read if the word cellovoci is written without spaces, or capital letter to break up the consonants. Choosing colors, fonts, logos, and branding can be tedious and expensive. It’s also quite risky, because often times, you’re stuck with your look for a while until you have some more funding to change it.
We hope you all have noticed we’re using bolder colors and brighter ideas. Despite the serious sound of many of our arrangements, Effie and James and I want to forge a path forward of joy and lighthearted character. For the last several years, there has been so much gloom and doom in the news, and heavy events happening around the world. CelloVoci is a “pet project” for the three of us. We are doing it mostly because it’s just so much damned fun to work with one another. Laughter is the best medicine, and for the three of us, it seems to be in endless supply when we get together. We can’t wait to introduce more pop audiences to classical music.
